We all know Obama would rather play basketball than go bowling and his choice of Secretary of Education will be a good team player since Duncan played professional basketball in Australia.
Duncan, a graduate of Harvard University, and the son Starkey Duncan who is a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, has extensive experience in educational policy and management and, of course, strong ties to the Chicago political machine. In 2001 Chicago Mayor Daly named Duncan the CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Duncan is not without his detractors including many Christians who opposed his proposal to have a “gay friendly” high school alternative.
A recent article in the Suntimes addressed the Chicago Public School 2007 audit in the CPS Inspector General’s 2008 report. One item stood out in this report. CPS purchased 30 cappuccino/espresso machines at a cost of $67,000!!! That is $2,333.33 per coffee machine! The author of the article goes on to say that CPS failed to bid out the purchase and that the machines could have been purchased for about $55,000 if they had followed bidding procedures. Okay, so it is fine to pay $1,833.33 for a cappuccino/espresso machine for public schools??? Give me a #%&*&^ (as Gov. Blago would say) break!
These purchases were made under Duncan’s watch. It will be interesting to see where the Federal education dollars go when he is Secretary of Education.
Ummm…I think I will go grab a cup of espresso…made with my $49 Krups machine.
