A Brave New Un-United States?

According to recent "Wall Street Journal" article a Russian professor has been predicting the fall of the United States for several years. His predictions include that the end is as near as 2010. If Mr. Panarin is right the only good thing is that California will be a part of China.

In recent weeks, he's been interviewed as much as twice a day about his predictions. "It's a record," says Prof. Panarin. "But I think the attention is going to grow even stronger."

Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is invited to Kremlin receptions, lectures students, publishes books, and appears in the media as an expert on U.S.-Russia relations."

Maybe I will take a Spanish lesson or two in 2009...just in case.

Inflation or Deflation?

First I will start with I am not an Economist. I did not even take a course in Economics in college and even struggled a little with Statistics. However, I have never lived in times like we are currently experiencing so I have become more than a little curious. I am sharing with you a brief overview of what I have learned.

My husband, who is a former CPA, really believes that we are going to have rampant inflation. We’ve had lots of talks about his theory that inflation like we have not seen in many, many years is just around the corner. I, on the other hand, having much less accounting education, think that our concern should be that we are entering a period of deflation that we have not seen since the “Great Depression.” I prefer him to be correct…but I don’t think so.

Deflation does not have to be a negative situation. For example: the cost of computers has gone down significantly over the past 20 years because technological advances allowed computers to be manufactured quicker and less expensively, therefore, they could be sold for less money. Everyone was happy; consumers spent less and manufacturers still made money.

If deflation is caused by a decreasing supply of money as happened in the Great Depression, then that is bad. The stock market crash greatly reduced the liquidity of the market place, the economy contracted, people lost their jobs. Banks stopped loaning money because people were defaulting. The problem compounded as more people lost their jobs and money supply fell further thus causing even more people to lose their jobs.

People are not spending as much money as they were a year or two ago (decrease in demand for goods); it is increasingly difficult to obtain loans (decreasing money supply); there is an over supply of homes on the market & retail stores are having to slash prices like we have never seen before (increasing supply of goods); and just about every industry is asking for a government bail out (increased demand for money).

According to what I have read a deflationary period is caused by the following:
1. Decreasing Money Supply
2. Increasing Supply of Goods
3. Decreasing Demand for Goods
4. Increasing Demand for Money

Inflation occurs when the purchasing power of the dollar is reduced. That does not seem to be happening now. Gas prices are low, retailers are discounting everything, homes are selling for less than they did four years ago, in short we can buy more with a dollar today than we could a year ago.
This is a brief overview of why I think we are entering a period of deflation and not inflation; and I don’t find it encouraging. This deflationary period is not because we are making things that cost less to make and therefore, we can sell it for less…it is due to the four ugly reasons stated above.

Little Blue Magic Pills

Okay, I am a woman so I guess I can't really relate to the latest story I read on NewsMax.com. But then again, maybe I can, for since I was a mere teen I heard that men are guided not by their hearts, or minds, but, by their...shall I say libido?

According to Newsmax the CIA has found the magic bullet...something that makes men give up information...at least in third world countries where they can't easily get their own prescription. Just give older male potential informants a couple Viagra pills and you and get the info you are seeking. Plus when they tell their friends you get even more informants. Who wouldathunkit?

According to the Newsmax source: "The key, Smith said, is to find a way to meet the informant’s personal needs in a way that keeps him firmly on your side but leaves little or no visible trace.


“You’re trying to bridge a gap between people living in the 18th century and people coming in from the 21st century,” Smith said, “so you look for those common things in the form of material aid that motivate people everywhere.”
Sexual performance drugs are generally unavailable in the remote areas where the agency’s teams operate. Viagra, however, has been available in Kabul markets for a number of years and enjoys a relatively wide reputation.


“You didn’t hand it out to younger guys, but it could be a silver bullet to make connections to the older ones,” said one retired operative familiar with the drug’s use in Afghanistan."

So the safety of the world may depend upon the "little blue pill"...and we just thought it was a recreational drug!

I am going to go check out the Pfizer stock. Looks the government might be buying a lot of it in the future.

Senator or Queen of Entitlement?

Found the "photoshopped" pic on Michellemalkin.com. One of Michelle's blog followers T. Hayes, posted this pic of Caroline Kennedy.


Michelle says:
"If she were applying to be, say, an undersecretary of education in Barack Obama’s new administration, Caroline Kennedy would have to fill out a 63-item confidential questionnaire disclosing potentially embarrassing text messages and diary entries, the immigration status of her household staff, even copies of every résumé she used in the last 10 years."

"If she were running for election to the Senate, Kennedy would have to file a 10-part, publicly available report disclosing her financial assets, credit card debts, mortgages, book deals and the sources of any payments greater than $5,000 in the last three years.

But Kennedy, who has asked Governor David Paterson to appoint her to succeed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton — and who helped oversee the vetting process for Obama’s possible running mates — is declining to provide a variety of basic data, including companies she has a stake in and whether she has ever been charged with a crime.

Kennedy declined on Monday to reply to those and other questions posed by The New York Times about any potential ethical, legal and financial entanglements. Through a spokesman, she said she would not disclose that kind of information unless and until she becomes a senator."

Another Side Effect of Banks Failing

Auto Execs Should Only Take $1 Salary?

Watching a bit of the grilling of the “Big Three” auto executives on tv could have been amusing if was not so darn annoying! The audacity of lawmakers in Washington demanding that the automaker executives give up their salary because they have screwed up their companies while at the same time the “grillors” (made up that word) are going to get an automatic increase in pay. The “grillors” company (the United States) is not doing so well right now…under their watch…should lawmakers give up their salaries for being a part of screwing up the economy?

(Plus the “grillors” made a big deal out of the auto execs flying in private jets…what about “Princess” Pelosi…has she given up her private jet?)

According to an article, written by Jordy Yager, found at thehill.com lawmakers will enjoy a 2.8% increase in pay which will cost the taxpayers an additional 2.5 million in salaries. After tossing around a few billion here, a trillion there, I guess a lousy 2.5 million does not mean much. But if you add up enough 2.5 millions here and there you will eventually get to a billion.

According to Yager’s article in thehill.com lawmakers actually make less than they did in 1965. “In the beginning days of 1789, Congress was paid only $6 a day, which would be about $75 daily by modern standards. But by 1965 members were receiving $30,000 a year, which is the modern equivalent of about $195,000. Currently the average lawmaker makes $169,300 a year, with leadership making slightly more. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) makes $217,400, while the minority and majority leaders in the House and Senate make $188,100.”

The pay hike is automatic but Members of Congress can vote to block the pay increase. This occurred during Republic majority Congress in 1994-1997 and 1999. Let’s see if the Dems vote to block the pay increase.

The three quotes above were all spoken by politicians responding to a financial crisis. The first two by FDR; the last...President Bush. See the common thread: just do something...even if it is wrong. That is what is happening. Politicians are just "doing something" even when they don't know if what they are
doing is hurtful or beneficial.

Blagojevich, SEIU, Rezco, Obama & Illinois Corrupt Politics

“Blagojevich, 51, and Harris, 46, both of Chicago, are each charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. They were charged in a two-count criminal complaint that was sworn out on Sunday and unsealed today following their arrests, which occurred without incident, the feds said.
“Harris allegedly said they could work out a deal with the union and the President-elect where SEIU could help the President-elect with Blagojevich’s appointment of Senate Candidate 1, while Blagojevich would obtain a position as the national director of the Change to Win campaign and SEIU would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future.” (emphasis added by me)

The reason I pulled the second paragraph from the article is that both the SEIU & Change to Win do have connections with Obama…I know you can not surprised. One of the things Obama has promised is to get legislation passed that will eliminate the secret ballot when employees are voting on joining a union. The Employee Free Choice Act, also known as the “Card Check”, bill is strongly opposed by the US Chamber of Commerce. (http://www.uschamber.com/issues/index/labor/cardchecksecrbal.htm).

With Obama’s ties to the SEIU, Change to Win, and other large union representatives union leaders feel comfortable that the Card Check bill will be passed in the first one hundred days of Obama’s presidency.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) endorsed Obama in February 2008, actively campaigned for Obama, and “encouraged” their members to contribute to Obama’s campaign fund. The actual amount that SEIU contributed can not be easily tallied but there is no question that the donations were substantial. A couple of months ago I read that the SEIU was Obama’s largest contributor.

One SEIU website (below) states: “Members hope Obama who was an SEIU organizer in Illinois prior to entering politics can achieve economic justice, quality, affordable healthcare for every American, the freedom for workers to unite in unions, and an end to the Iraq war.” http://www.seiu521.org/news_archive/SEIU_International_Has_Officially_Endorsed_Barack_Obama_for_President_.aspx

Change to Win (CTW) is an organization of seven major unions with about six million members. CTW also endorsed Obama in February 2008. I went on the CTW website and looked up the leadership. Anna Burger, SEIU secretary-treasurer and CTW chair, also served as an economic advisor to Obama during his campaign. There are some interesting characters on the CTW leadership list including James Hoffa & Edgar Romney.

Maybe Harris, Blagojevich’s Chief of Staff, felt so comfortable stating that the SEIU “would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future” is because he had intimate knowledge of the close ties between the unions and Obama…looks like Obama already owes SEIU and CTW some “favorable” stuff.

Another one of Obama’s friends, Tony Rezco, has strong ties with the arrested Governor of Illinois. Back in October Mike Robinson, a writer for AP, commented on Rezco’s connection with Blagojevich.

In addition to raising funds for Obama Rezco is credited with raising hundreds of thousands for Blagojevich. Do you think Rezco has been ‘singing’ to save his neck?

Islam is the Light?!?!?!?

I heard about a doll by Fisher Price today. I think it is called a "Cuddle and Coo" doll and was available at some Walmart stores for about $20.

Unfortunately, this cute little doll does more than "coo"...according to many it says: "Islam is the Light."

I listened to several YouTube videos plus what I heard on the Glenn Beck show this morning. Seems pretty clear to me that the doll says "Islam is the Light." Now if Fisher Price were selling the dolls in countries that are primarily Islamic I guess that is their choice but Walmart in the US?
