Obama's Economic Advisors

I give President-elect Obama credit for hitting the road running. Within a couple of days of being elected he met with a top-notch team of economic advisors and held a press conference.

In the past the President-elect has waited a few weeks after the election to hold news conferences on substantive issues, however, with the current make-up of both the Senate and House Obama is in a situation that he could actually get some things done before he takes office.

Here’s the list:

Warren Buffet. At the beginning of 2008 Warren Buffet was ranked, by Forbes, as the richest man in the world with a net worth over $60 billion. He is a successful business owner and stock market investor.

Robert Rubin. Rubin served as Secretary of the Treasury during both Clinton administrations. He knows how Washington and Wall Street operate.

Jamie Dimon. CEO and Chairman, JP Morgan Chase. Dimon supports targeted spending cuts and cautions against overspending.

Larry Summers. Former President of Harvard & Treasury Secretary during part of Clinton’s second term. Summers supports Government investing in infrastructure to create jobs and supports Obama’s tax plan.

Eric Schmidt. CEO and Chairman, Google. Schmidt was a Obama supporter during the campaign and provided advice on clean energy & technology along with being a significant fundraiser.

Indra Nooyi. CEO and Chairwoman, Pepsi. Nooyi also serves on the Boards of Motorola and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. With her international business experience it is thought that should could assist in developing global markets.

Paul Volker. Volker served as chairman of the Federal Reserve during the Carter and Reagan administrations. Volker advised Obama during the campaign. He is concerned with practices of manipulation of the market that reward the manipulators (I assume he is referring to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.)

Austan Goolsbee. Economist, University of Chicago. Goolsbee is Obama’s advisor that encourages raising the capital gains tax & estate taxes and believes the tax code should provide relief to the middle class.

Jeffrey Liebman.
Liebman is a professor of public policy at Harvard. During Clinton’s administration Liebman served as special assistant on economic policy. He has researched the Earned Income Tax Credit program and raising Social Security taxes for Obama’s economic plan that was laid out during the campaign.

Jason Furman. Furman is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Brookings is an independent research and policy institution (think tank). Furman has defended free trade and is considered to be more conservative than some others on the advisory board.

Jared Bernstein. Berstein is the director of the Living Standards Program at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). According to the EPI website their mission is to “inform and empower people to seek solutions that will ensure broadly shared prosperity and opportunity.” Bernstein is in favor of raising capital gains taxes, universal health care, and government investing in infrastructure to produce jobs.

Gene Sperling. Senior fellow at the Center for American Progress (CAP). Sperling also served on Bill Clinton’s National Economic Council. CAP is another think tank. Their mission: Progressive Ideas for a Strong, Free, and Just America. Sperling supports government spending to ease the current economic woes & energy reform.

Laura Tyson. Tyson served a director of the National Economic Council during the Clinton administration. Tyson is currently a professor at Berkley and is an expert in domestic and international policy matters. She also supports increased government spending and middle class tax cuts.

Penny Pritzker. Pritzker’s family owns the Hyatt hotel chain and she is CEO of Pritzker Realty Group. She also chairs TransUnion, a credit reporting agency, and an airport off-site parking company, Parking Spot. A billionaire who resides in Chicago Tyson is very involved in educational reform. In 2008 Pritzker served as Obama’s National Finance Chair.
